Pho Lucky: Bringing the Best of the Far East to You
For this week's restaurant review, we're heading overseas to the Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Lucky!
Pho (pronounced "fuh") is a very fragrant traditional Vietnamese soup made with rice noodles topped with fresh herbs such as cilantro, basil and bean sprouts, and your choice of thinly cut raw meat that's cooked when piping hot spiced beef broth is poured over it.
Pho Lucky has several incarnations of this classic dish, with meat options ranging from cooked beef and meatballs to raw round eye steak (and also shrimp if you go to the downtown Detroit location). They do recommend that if you're having one of their raw meat dishes that you dine-in however, as they don't want the broth to cool down to the point where it won't properly cook the meat.
In the case that you're busy schedule won't allow you to stay inside and eat, there's no need to worry. Pho Lucky's take out options are just as delicious as the rest of their entrées. My personal favorite is the noodle soup with cooked beef. The rugged texture of the thinly sliced beef meshes well with the soft noodles that slowly loosen in the aromatic broth. The herbs and bean sprouts give it just the right amount of crunch to keep it from being too soupy. All in all, Pho is an excellent option for lunch or dinner.
If you're not looking for something as hearty as Pho, or you'd just like something small to go along with it, I'd recommend the spring rolls. Although at first glance, they don't seem like much, they're definitely worth a try. Their crisp outer shell provides a solid crunch around the tender shrimp, pork and vegetable filling. What really makes them stand out however is the sauce. Each order of spring rolls comes with a Vietnamese garlic sauce. When paired with the spring roll, it's a recipe for success. It adds just the right amount of tanginess to the otherwise still delicious yet slightly dry roll.
While it may not be the cheapest option out there, but it could definitely be a lot worse. With a bowl of Pho ranging from $7.50 to $9.00 and an order of 2 spring rolls priced at $3.00, you'll definitely want to come prepared to come out of at least a little cash. Pho Lucky definitely has a very settling vibe and it would make an interesting place for a group outing. With locations in Southfield, Detroit, Redford, and Novi, you're never too far from your next bowl of pho. If you're looking to try something new, then this is the right place to start!
