In order to bring in the new year and celebrate the return of WaivLife, we're covering someone very special, Ferndale's own Jermisdope!
Jerm is a young rapper born in Detroit, but raised primarily in Ferndale. He's been making music for a few years now, and it's definitely starting to pay off. This carefree musician has slowly been building a fanbase spanning all the way from Detroit to Oakland, California.
After just one listen to any of his songs, it's clear that Jerm's sound is one that's all his own. His laid back lifestyle definitely shines through into his music and creates something unique. "I pretty much differ from other local artists in every single way." And it's true. Coming from the suburbs of Ferndale, his upbringing makes him more comfortable with expressing himself in ways that would be considered unusual by more close minded individuals. It plays in his favor however, as it keeps his sound entirely unique.
In addition to music, Jerm also runs a multimedia company started by himself along with his girlfriend that encompasses everything art related from music to photography and film under the name Sex Wave Media. Although the company is still relatively new, he plans to bring it into the limelight this year, making some large leaps in various fields. "There's gonna be a lot of official moves happening under Sex Wave Media this year. Just a lot of crazy art stuff and business moves."
With the year just starting, we're excited to see what else Jerm has up his sleeve. One thing that we can hope to expect around the Summer is his debut album, currently under the working title "Petranova 2". We'll be sure to keep you updated, but in the meantime you can keep up with this talented musician by following him on Twitter (@jermisdope) or checking out his SoundCloud (soundcloud.com/jermisdope).
What is your goal for 2017?
I've got a lot of goals man, but if I could give you the top three: Put out my debut album, the official real deal. I think I'm going to officially make the move out West to California this year, and my third goal is just to make sure that a lot more people understand who Jermisdope is and what Sex Wave Media is as well as ABX, LostBoys and all the brotherhoods or collectives I'm under and represent.
What message do you want to spread through your music?
It's always been freedom. Freedom, selflessness, carelessness in a positive way, like nothing can phase me or touch me. Positivity, it's love. I get cocky sometimes, but really it's just feeling free, whatever that means to you. And my music is 100% authentic. Everything I write, rap or sing comes from real life experiences.
What's your biggest motivation when it comes to making music?
Not having what I want and not being comfortable in life. I have to get up and go to work every morning and do a job that I don't really want to do. I don't hate it, but I don't really want to do it. So the fact that I have to get up and do what I don't want to do every day motivates me to feed into my passion and try to make a living off of that because I don't want to work every day. I just want to live comfortably. That's what we all want.
Is music your primary field of interest or do you plan to expand?
I like a lot of different things. Since I was a little kid, I was really into politics. And I was also heavily interested in law enforcement and crime. I felt like I knew I could go to college and become those things, but I felt like I was skipping out on my dream and putting music on the back burner because I knew it was harder to achieve. But I just realized that I had a more impactful way of putting my message out into the world, and I stuck with music. I might get into acting one day or modeling, anything that's within the artist boundaries.
